Greenbriar swim update week of June 6

Hi Greenbriar Dolphins family,

In this weekly update, please read on to learn about signing up your swimmer for time trials (sign ups due Monday 6/8), volunteering, signing up for future meets, morning practices, upcoming events like the ice cream social and pancake breakfast, and our first meets.

Time Trials: Time trials is a practice meet, for Greenbriar swimmers only, to get official times on the books for the 2026 season. Please take the following two steps to attend:

  1. Declare your swimmers’ availability as soon as possible, and no later than Monday 6/8 (via Swimtopia or directly on the team website). Swimmers will automatically be entered in strokes for which they have a time from last year. Swimmers new to the team will automatically be entered in freestyle only. The coaches will then consider the swimmers for any additional events. Please add a note to coaches to let them know if your swimmer will not be able to attend the entire time trials meet, or to request additional strokes.
  2. Sign up for a volunteer job for time trials. This meet is an all hands on deck event! We have seasoned volunteers available to train new volunteers in all open positions.

The meet starts EARLY at 8:00 am. Please note the early arrival and warmup times:

Ages 9-11 arrive at 7:00 for 7:10-7:25 warm up

8 and under arrive by 7:15 for 7:25-7:35 warmup

12 and up arrive by 7:25 for 7:35-7:55 warm up

Pro tip: plan on bringing a chair for each swimmer to use in the grassy team area, sunscreen and bug spray. Swimmers should wear the team suit and bring their cap and goggles, extra towels, and extra warm layers. Parents might want to plan on bringing cash or credit card for purchases at our amazing Dolphin Diner.

Team suits: Once our team suits are in, it is the team expectation that team suits only will be worn at Saturday meets. Previous seasons’ suits can be worn in place of this year's suit if the need arises. Please email the team reps if you encounter a situation where your swimmer needs or would like to wear another suit.

Signing up for future meets:

Saturday meets: Swimmers are selected for this meet based on times. To help the coaches, please go to the events page and declare your swimmer’s availability for every Saturday of the season. The deadline to declare availability is the Monday before each meet. It is helpful to the coaches, though, if you do this in advance now.

Monday meets: Swimmers may select 2 events plus IM (if interested) to swim each Monday meet. If your swimmer does not have a legal time yet in a stroke, please consult with the coaches to ensure your child is ready and set up for success before signing them up. Monday entries are subject to coach approval. The deadline to sign up for Monday swims is the Saturday before each Monday meet.

We will send out a team reminder each week for sign ups. Out of fairness to the other team, we cannot accommodate last minute deck entries.

Ice cream social: June 12 at 6:30 pm. Please RSVP so our coordinators know how much ice cream to purchase and sign up to bring a topping. We also need volunteers to help out at the event and to set up the pool afterwards for time trials. Bring your old fins if you would like to be part of the fin exchange.

Morning Practices: Morning practices start on Thursday, June 18. A few items to note:

  1. Swimmers must have passed the pool swim safety test to participate in morning practices.
  2. All 9 and under swimmers must be supervised by an adult. This does not have to be a parent, but can be another parent your child knows to go to if they have a need.
  3. All swimmers must leave the pool area once their practice is completed, unless they are remaining with a supervising adult while a sibling is in practice.
  4. Unfortunately, all playgrounds and the baby pool are closed during morning practices.

Pancake Breakfast: To celebrate the beginning of summer (and to help our swimmers get up early for their first morning practice!), our team tradition is to have a pancake breakfast the first day of morning practice. We need lots of volunteers, so please sign up to help!

Sponsorships: Would your business or do you know a business that would like to advertise to the Greenbriar Swim & Dive community? Greenbriar Swim & Dive team sponsorship is the perfect opportunity for a very reasonable price (and it's tax deductible). If you do, please reach out to Julie Feil ([email protected]) to contact them. And Thank you for your help! https://greenbriar.org/swim-and-dive-sponsorship

Please support our current sponsors, Katrina Funkhouser, Gotta Go with Joe, Mobility Etc. and Centreville Swim Team.

New families: If you are a new family and were not able to attend the parent meeting, please visit the website and read the parent handbook. Reach out with any questions.
